M1 SWOT analysis

Sci Fi comedy, similar to Red Dwarf in its location rather than premise. larger Target Audience than Oil Barron Idea. Caters to more people due to the comedic element involved. Comedy programmes are one of the main pillars that make up the BBC programme schedule. there are many comedy shows on BBC3 and its a staple of the channel. large budget that can be decreased by not using special effects. competition from corporations such as Disney with tier Star Wars IP.

No competition from shows with a similar premise, but that's not to say it has no competition at all; shows on rival channels such as ITV and Channel 4. The show has a high budget, not as high as it originally was, I had to reconsider the location from rural America to Rural England. there are opportunities to educate the audience on the act of oil drilling and what life was like in the 20th century. suitable for the target audience as its has a relatable protagonist who's of the same age as the intended target audience.

Crime drama. competition from shows such as happy valley and the responder. quite a popular genre. can tackle relevant social issues which may help draw in viewers. the show has a clear story that is a recycle of every other cop drama of the past decade. small budget compared to what came before. suitable for target audience as it tackles issues they may face and has a protagonist that they can relate to.

In the end, i chose to do the Oil Barron idea. i developed the characters, idea, plot, location and time period. i created character arcs, plot arcs, proposals outlining the entire story and what resources i need.
i chose this idea as its original, it hasn’t been done before. the time period is one that hasn’t had a lot of exposure, as opposed to World War 2 or Modern day.

P5 post production and Different Versions of Video

 Final Music Video

The Music video Was filmed at 1920x1080 at 25fps, 48kH in Stereo sound.

I worked with James in a directing role, and when the footage was imported into our editing software - Final Cut Pro - we used the same settings that we filmed in, 1920x1080 at 25fps, 48kH in Stereo sound. James was the editor, he started by ordering the narrative shots on the timeline in line with the music. the first edit of the music video unfortunately didn't have enough footage to fill the entire song, so for version 2 we added in footage of James training, this acted as a way to plug the gap which was made by the first version. The filming for the extra footage took place at James' house, using his parents as camera operators instead of me and Lewis

The difference between edit one and edit two are that edit two has some extra clips included at the The beginning of the video and edit one has some clips missing as well. For the scene where the main character is walking across the bridge in Final Cut Pro James turned up the exposure for these two shorts because it was filmed during different times of the day to the rest of the clips so I needed to look brighter there was no other colour correction.

Once the additional footage had been
completed (James filming a training montage in place of where a black hole once stood) James attempted cut the video on parts on the beat, there just wasn't enough footage to be able to do this on every beat. James also added sound effects to the video, this is most prominent throughout the fight scene where the sounds of punches can be heard.

First Version

Version 1 of Behind the scenes

Final Version of the behind the scenes video

The final version includes more footage that both me and James deemed necessary to accurately show how the music video was filmed, such as close up shots and a longer fight scene

P1 ideas generation and Audience pleasures

Last week I shared the 3 potential ideas i had concerning a TV show for BBC 3. the 3 ideas I had were; a crime drama about an acholic cop who hunts down a infamous armed robber , a sci fi comedy about a ship that's broken down in front of a blackhole that's slowly pulling the ship and its crew in, and finally, a drama about an oil baron during the 1870s in America that tries to get permission to drill on a elderly persons land that is sitting on a ocean of oil. Now the feedback I was given all centred on the fact that the only story that was fleshed out was the oil driller one, so I've decided to cut the other two story's out and only focus on that single one as I feel I can grow this idea.

Changes marked in green

Idea 1 - cop drama

Set in the early 2000s in london, follows the story of a detective who’s trying to put a murderer behind bars. he’s an alcoholic who’s skilled at his job, despite his demeanour at work. he has a brother, jamie,  who is unemployed and is living in lower class housing and is mentally unstable. Cook cares for him and provides support. it’s revealed that Jamie is the killer and is pretending to be mentally ill on order to fool cook

Idea 2 - space comedy

set in the far distant future on a mining ship. the ships engines are destroyed after a meteor shower and it slowly heads towards a black hole. the ships crew are comprised of a few characters, there is no singular main character. George is a headstrong captain of the ship, Leo is the engineer who’s quite dim, but is brilliant with anything mechanical. Roby is the pilot, she’s quite strict and stuck up, but makes up for it with her piloting skills

Idea 3 - oil drama                                                                                                                                              The year is 1870, the setting is the Midwest of America. (Changed to Hardstoft, Derbyshire for budgetary reasons and its where the first oil field was discovered in 1919) Newly emerging Oil Barron, James Holley, has his eye on a large plot of land he believes has oil underneath it. he discovers that the land is owned by a stubborn elderly gentleman with dementia called Cornelius Bedford who refuses to sell up his land. the series follows James' attempts to convince the old man to sell his land. Bedford keeps insisting there is no oil to be found on his property but James believes that the Bedford is holding out, trying to get him to up his offer . James decides to take drastic measures and gets his men to try to scare Bedford into leaving his land. this turns into a dastardly mistake as the his house burns down with him inside. James is arrested by the local police who see the fire in the distance and realize what he was trying to do. James is sentenced to life in prison for the actions he took and its revealed that Bedford's land is worthless, and that there is no oil, just as he had said.

*This is all subject to change*

Characters present are;

James Sinclair  - the morally bankrupt Oil Barron, he’s greedy, manipulative and he will stop at nothing to make a profit.

Alfred Watson -  the stubborn old man and antagonist to James. he suffers from dementia which James tries to take advantage of.

Oliver Bedford  -a young geologist and James' second-in-command.. He's eager to please James in anyway he can and is often known for telling James exactly what he wants to hear.
