M3 and M4 WIP

===========================================================================
Improvements
So, as the brief says, the music video can include live action, and that’s what we chose. there aren’t any graphical elements included as i felt that it would hamper the message behind the music video. Our music video also ran for the length of the Song, the first version fell about 30 seconds short of covering the entire song so we had to add extra footage of James training in order to plug the gap. All the content we used was created by James, Lewis and myself, there’s no copyrighted elements in the video apart from the song itself. In the filming diary there were plans to have external footage play over the opening of the documentary but i decided against it.

Camera shots normally used in pop videos are medium shots in order to see the artist and the background. there are instances of other shots being used such as over the shoulder shots, close ups and wide shots, but these are less common. in terms of our music video, we used a whole range of shot types including mediums, wides and close ups. Editing on music videos normally comprise of camera shots cutting when the beat changes.

Our costumes needed to feel authentic to the location and time period, so it was only natural to have both myself and James wearing our usual clothes. the clothes worn were school uniforms, as it fits in with the setting of the music video. There was a continuity error involving the clothes worn around 40 Seconds into the video that we fixed on the second day of filming.

Shot types, the start of the video begins with a slow down pan of the camera towards the protagonist and the video ends with a slow upwards pan away from the protagonist, this helps give the video a sense of symmetry and allows the story to come full circle. Another shot that i’d like to point out is the one at 0.46. it’s meant to be reminiscent of old western films where either the protagonist or the antagonist are introduced via a slow pan upwards that first reveals their feet, legs, torso and then head, here, i elected for just the feet shot, as it feel it builds up a sense of dread and suspicion about the character. it also creates an aura of superiority as the camera is below the antagonists and it therefor makes him look dominant and menacing.

P4 Logging Rushes

Unusable shots included those where the actors looked at the camera, messed up actions tripped or where the footage just isn't usable.

Usable shots include those that past the criteria, where no one looked at the camera, where everyone did what was required of them without any major mistakes

Should be noted that James was the actual editor, i took on the directing role and we both reviewed the footage together

M3 Understanding Feedback

Okay, um, you have to pay actors. when you make a thing for the BBC its a contractural requirement. so you have to demonstrate that you've paid for everything, you can get stuff for free and then -

Even the extras?

no, you have to pay extras. that's just a technical note. um so I want to go back to the story again, we've got um, talk me though the characters again a bit slower. so who's the protagonist

Oliver bedford

Oliver is the protagonist. age?

21

21. and he is the Oil Barron who's at risk?

no, that's his mentor who's James

James is the mentor?, how old is he?

Id say about 30, I haven't really -

30? Okay. yea, his mentor, and then who's the other character?

Alfred Watson

Alfred, and Alfreds story? what's his age sorry?

70

70s? yea, and his son was killed in the first world war, that right?

M2 Music Video

 Risk Assessment and consent forms

Improvements

Q: So HOW will you choose to show that violence in a way that OFCOM will accept?

The violence we will show will be minimal, there will be no blood, bruises, scaring etc. The scenes consists of a few punches, a shove and a few kicks, but they are all captured on a wide shot, and it’s fairly obvious that both the punches and kicks don’t land, There are sound effects for the beatings, but it’s stock sound footage that is used on a variety of children's programs so it’s nothing that they haven’t heard before.

OFCOM states that:
“must not be featured in programmes made primarily for children unless there is strong editorial justification;
• must not be broadcast before the watershed (in the case of television), when children are particularly likely to be listening (in the case of radio), or when content is likely to be accessed by children (in the case of BBC ODPS), unless there is editorial justification.”

Since our music video is primarily aimed at older, more mature audiences i don’t see this as a issue for us. whilst it is possible for children to come across our video on youtube, the violence that is present is on par with the violence portrayed in Loony Tunes or Tom & Jerry.

Ethical

whilst some critics may say that our music video is glamorising violence I would make the case that the story isn't meant to be taken literally. Yes, there are instances of fighting occurring, but the violence isn't meant to be taken literally. we are not advocating violence against another person, we are, however, advocating the option to stand up for yourself. the story is meant to be viewed In a metaphorical sense, whilst the message in meant to be viewed literally

M2 Identify Potential Questions

what was the inspiration behind the show?

After watching the film "there will be blood" i was captivated by the history behind oil drilling and after scouring the internet i found that there were very few shows or films that surround the subject of old fashioned oil drilling.

what competition is there

As previously mentioned there are essential no TV show that explore the same themes and story as my show, aside from the show Dallas which ended a few years ago. Competition from other dramas on BBC channels include Our World War, Our Girl and Around The World In 80 Days

how does it suite the target audience

After the media department sent out a survey we found that there was a fair amount of interest in dramas and historical dramas. whilst the numbers aren't as high as comedy or action i feel there is still enough interest in order to justify the creation of my TV show

are there any budgetary problems that could arise?

The vast majority of my TV show will be filmed in the countryside, This is to help keep the costs down and allow the budget the stretch to other important areas. there will be one episode that i can see being very costly and its the episode that explores James' backstory. the majority of the episode is set during the First World War and obviously the location has to reflect this. Therefor a vast area of land will need to be cordoned off and transformed into a series of trench networks filled with barbed wire, 2 pillboxes and a crater where James and Alfred's son will be. Other then that episode I foresee that the remaining episodes will be relatively cheap both in terms of resources and funds.

P2 supporting documents

P2 Proposal for TV series

p4 final Pitch Delivery

Evaluation

I feel that my pitch went well, overall. admittedly there were a few improvements i could've made. i felt that i knew the answers to a lot of the questions and that my story was clear and sound whilst also being flexible with feedback. as for me delivering the pitch, i feel that i spoke confidently and clearly. my presentation covered all the required aspects  and i had all the supporting documents including the character and story arcs.
